The Project
The Donner Lake Rim Trail, a project of the Truckee Donner Land Trust, is almost entirely an all-volunteer effort to build a trail encircling the peaks around Donner Lake. Hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians can enjoy the stunning views of the Lake, Mount Rose and the Pacific Crest from the trail, which will be 23 miles when complete. In the recent Town of Truckee General Plan Update, residents made it clear that our community’s trails and recreational opportunities are some of the key economic and cultural assets of our region.
With the rapidly expanding population of the Truckee area, the Donner Lake Rim Trail provides a much-needed addition to the trails in the Truckee Donner region. Trails will run from downtown Truckee west to Donner Summit and connect with existing trails, including the Summit Lake Trail, the Hole-in-the-Ground Trail, and the trails leading into the proposed Castle Peak Wilderness.
There are many ways you can support the building of the trail. First, you can adopt a section of trail. All donors of $1,000 or more will be recognized on a plaque at one of the trailhead informational kiosks. This is a great way to create a legacy that will benefit the entire community. Learn more about the Adopt-a-Quarter Mile Program.
You can also volunteer to build a section of trail. Imagine how you will feel using the trail in the future and remembering the section of trail you created. It's a very rewarding day, as well as a great team-building tool. You can also join us for one of our existing trail building days.
